UMPI baseball closes season with sweep of CMCC

     PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (12-25) swept Central Maine Community College in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Presque Isle. The Owls blanked the winless Mustangs 6-0 in the first game and also won the second, 7-2.

     The Owls finished up the regular season with a 12-25 record. UMPI baseball has been invited to join the City Universities of New York Athletic Conference as an associate member for baseball only and will compete in the CUNYAC conference tournament next week in New York

     UMPI will be the No. 4 seed and will play fifth-seeded Lehman College in an elimination game. The winner of that game will advance to a double-elimination style bracket to determine the conference tournament winner.

     On senior day Saturday at the Presque Isle High School baseball field, Andrew Bartlett took the ball and pitching a complete game shutout in game one. Bartlett, a senior from Damariscotta, scattered five hits, struck out six batters and did not allow a walk in a dominant performance for his third win of the season.

     Tommy Collins, another senior who hails from Pembroke, went 2 for 3 including a double and scored twice. Ryan Sanderson, a freshman from Cow Bay, Nova Scotia, also went 2 for 3 with a double and scored a run.

     In the nightcap, Matt Curry, a sophomore from Caribou, delivered the first run of the game with an RBI single and Adam Begos followed with a run-scoring single to give the Owls a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

     CMCC tied the score in the top of the second, but UMPI regained the lead with an unearned run in the fourth and added two more in the fifth and two insurance runs in the sixth.

     Collins garnered his first career victory on the mound by going four innings and striking out four. Tyler McLaughlin struck out eight of the nine batters he faced while pitching the final three frames.

     Begos and Curry were each 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
