Vikings’ offense strong in second game against Hawks

LCS/MSSM girls started with 14-0 shoutout over Wisdom

The Caribou baseball team was able to split a doubleheader for the second time this season. The Vikes bounced back Saturday from a 9-0 opening-game loss to defeat the Hermon Hawks in game two, 12-8.

Michael Hunter had four hits and Caribou exploded for six fourth-inning runs in the victory. Justin Ouellette and Gunnar Bondeson combined for the pitching duties.

Tyler Dombroski was saddled with the game one loss as the Vikings were unable any offense against Hawk pitchers Nick Guerrette and Matthew Leach. Mason Huck doubled for Caribou.

The Vikes are now 2-3 on the season. Houlton paid a visit last Wednesday and handed Caribou an 11-8 defeat.

The CHS softball team was belted in a pair of games by the undefeated Hawks Saturday, 23-0 and 18-0, and is now 0-5 to begin the season. Last Wednesday, the Vikings fell to the Shiretowners, 16-2. Jaelynn Doody’s two hits paced Caribou’s offense.

Sara Edgecomb tossed a three-hitter Friday as Fort Fairfield blanked Washburn, 8-0, for the team’s first win of the season and an 0-2 start. Sarah Watt had two hits and three RBIs for the winners. The Tigers also stopped East Grand/GHCA and held the Vikings scoreless in the 14-0 win.

Washburn also lost to Hodgdon last Tuesday, 17-14, to begin the season with an 0-2 mark.

The LCS/MSSM girls started with an impressive 14-0 shutout over Wisdom but fell by a 4-3 score at home to Ashland Saturday. The Eagle offense managed just four hits against the Hornets, with Sarah Hemphill doubling and Jackie Peers and Morganne Emery each contributing a single.

On the baseball diamond, the Tiger boys have started strong with victories over Madawaska, Southern Aroostook, Washburn and East Grand. Fort Fairfield has allowed just five runs over its last three games. Carter Bruce has picked up a pair of pitching wins so far and Jared Harvey was dominant in Thursday’s 7-2 triumph over Washburn, striking out 14 batters while going the distance.

The Beavers posted a victory in their only other game by a 12-6 score over a strong Hodgdon squad. A six-run rally in the third inning keyed the win for Washburn. Noah Caron scored three runs after reaching base safely four times, while McCall Turner tripled, singled and scored twice.

First-year coach Pierre Huntress won his LCS/MSSM debut, stopping the Wisdom Pioneers, 8-5. Mason Patten had three hits and five RBIs and Gordon McCulloh struck out 12 batters to grab the win on the mound.

The team fell short at Central Aroostook Saturday, dropping a 10-7 decision. Sophomores Matthew Pelkey and Kyle Provencal had two hits each in the loss.
