100 Years Ago – May 10, 1916
School debate — A novel entertainment was afforded friends of Houlton High and Ricker Classical Institute on Friday evening. The subject selected for discussion was, “Resolved that the United States should promote in all ways a Pan-American Union.” The judges for the debate were Hon. Thos. V. Doherty, Rev. Mr. Thompson and H.A. Dykeman, who after careful deliberation gave the decision in favor of HHS, which was received by generous applause.
75 Years Ago – May 8, 1941
Musical special — Mrs. T. H. Ritchie will present a special program entitled “The Life of Christ in Music” in the Court Street Baptist Church using 424 musical sleigh bells, 32 musical cow bells, 28 musical glasses and a set of organ chimes.
100 years young — Moses Pryor, former Bridgewater man who makes his home in Monticello, celebrates his 100th birthday Tuesday, May 6. He has spent most of his life in Bridgewater but was born in Centreville, N.B. When he was a young boy he ran away from home, across the border to Houlton and then to Linneus.
50 Years Ago – May 12 , 1966
Top prize — Young Michael Goodwin was the first place winner in the oil painting division of an exhibit in creative arts held at the Gentle Memorial Building. Mrs. Robert Lovett and Mrs. Basil Churchill tied for second place. The exhibit was attended by approximately 150 adults and an unregistered number of youth.
50th anniversary — Mr. and Mrs. Percy Foster of Island Falls were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary April 23 at an open house observance with their daughters Mrs. Alton Seeley of Presque Isle, Mrs. Tesley Watson of Washburn and Mrs. Weldon Parent of Monticello as hostesses.
25 Years Ago – May 8, 1991
Have a heart — The Heart Association fundraiser Tuesday night “was a tremendous success,” said Alma Fournier, chairman. “The waiters went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure their guests had a good time.” One of the evening’s waiters, Bill Upper, member of the American Heart Association, waited on tables knowing that the dollars raised will support the association’s mission of fighting heart and blood vessel disease in Houlton.
Century old — Mrs. Minnie E. Smart, wife of the late Ora E. Smart of Houlton, celebrated her 100th birthday on April 13 at a party given at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Anita Smart in Readfield. Her other son and daughter-in-law, Atwood and June Smart of Meadowbrook, Pa., as well as friends and relatives, including five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, attended the party.
