100 Years Ago – May 17, 1916
Music — The Houlton Music Club announced that, with the cooperation of several of the churches, they will repeat the choruses and solos of Handel’s “Messiah,” which they rendered at their last concert of the season, June 4 at the Methodist Church. It is hoped there will be a good attendance. A silver collection will be taken up.
75 Years Ago – May 15, 1941
Extends thanks — Genuine appreciation for assistance and an indomitable faith that the British will whip Hitler’s hordes are expressed in a letter received this week by Miss Mary Archibald of Houlton from Mrs. Edith Durrell in Sheerness, Kent, England. The letter came as a thank you for some articles of clothing donated some time ago by Miss Archibald which were included in a shipment for England.
Graduate — Miss Helen A. Ford and Miss Marion Hawkins are members of the graduation class of the Maine General Hospital in Portland. Graduation takes place May 21 at the hospital. They are both graduates of Houlton High School in the class of 1937.
50 Years Ago – May 18 , 1966
Scholarship received — Danny R. McGary of Smyrna was selected to receive the Aroostook County Medical Society Scholarship for this semester at Ricker College. The scholarship was given by Richard S. Roper, dean of the Ricker College. The scholarship was awarded annually to a pre-medical student in Aroostook County.
State champ — Julie Dunn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dunn of Houlton, captured both the strutting and twirling championships Sunday in the United States Twirling Association’s State contest at Madawaska. Julie observed her 9th birthday a week prior.
25 Years Ago – May 15, 1991
50th — Fifty springs have marked the marriage of Francis and Albertine Cyr of Mt. Chase. Married April 21, 1941, in Island Falls. This anniversary was particularly special for the Cyrs because it is sometimes difficult to gather the whole family together at one time. All but one of their grandchildren were able to celebrate with them.
Crop walk — The annual Crop Walk was held in Houlton May 5 with 83 walkers participating. Their cause was to walk, sponsored by contributors, raising money for the hungry and the needy across the world. As a result, young and old alike gathered at the church to begin the 6.3 mile walk that traversed much of Houlton.
