Maj. Osgood flies over home
EASTON NEWS
Maj. Matthew T. Osgood graduated as Salutatorian and Principal Award winner of his Easton High School Class of 2001 and was accepted at the United States Air Force Academy with the ultimate goal of becoming a pilot. He was quoted by one of his high school classmates as saying, “One day I am going to fly over Easton High School!”
Matt was able to fulfill his prophecy because of his last active duty assignment. While still in the U.S. Air Force, he was assigned to the Royal Canadian Air Force at Trenton Air Force Base in Ontario, Canada, as a liaison officer. His mission was teaching the RCAF how to utilize all of the multi-role capabilities of their C-17s such as tactical air drop, low-level operations and special operations. This assignment led to a different set of military flight regulations that gave his parents a wonderful and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to actually fly with him in the cockpit of one of the Canadian C-17s on September 12, 2015.
On April 21, 2016, family and friends were privileged to witness Matt’s his last active duty flight right at various locations around the County. Yes, he did fly over Easton High School as he promised he would many years ago.
Maj. Osgood was very humbled by the reaction to his flight around the County and was overwhelmed by the outpouring of congratulatory comments as well as emotional reaction to this flight.
Since the flight, he and his wife, Jessica, and 9-month old son Jadon have moved to Enid, Okla., which is home to Vance AFB. That is where both he and his younger brother, Michael, went to pilot training school after they graduated from the Air Force Academy. Matt Osgood has transitioned from active duty to the Air Force Reserves and will be working at Vance, teaching new student pilots how to fly. This change will lead to him not flying C-17s as he has for the last 12 years but rather the T-6 Flight Trainer which is a performance aircraft; but considerably smaller than a C-17. Simultaneously, he is going to fly for one of the major airlines.
Maj. Osgood is very excited about both aspects of the new jobs — flying for the airlines and a more “normal” schedule, but, also building upon his active duty service via the Reserves so that he can still get his normal Air Force retirement in a few years. The T-6 is a very exciting airplane to fly and he is rated as an aircraft commander with several thousand hours of flying time. The squadron at Vance is very pleased to have someone with Osgood’s experience as a flight instructor.
Michael Osgood is also a C-17 pilot, stationed in Charleston, S.C., and a younger sister, Michelle, who is a medical student in Tennessee. His parents, Thomas and Ann Osgood, continue to reside in Easton.
