The Fort Fairfield baseball team and the LCS/MSSM softball team have the highest rankings among squads in the region in the Heal Point standings.
The Tigers have a 6-1 mark at the midway point of the season, good for third place overall in Class D North. FF trails only Penobscot Valley of Howland and Shead of Eastport.
Fort Fairfield played just one game last week, recording a 10-0 victory over Southern Aroostook last Wednesday. Carter Bruce fired a two-hit shutout while going the distance on the mound for the winners. Dalton Cassidy scored four times and had a pair of singles, while Jon Bernard doubled twice and Ryan Player also had two hits. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth due to the 10-run rule, with Josh Ricker activating it with a run-scoring single.
The LCS/MSSM girls were successful in both games they played and are 6-1 and in eighth place in the C North division. The Eagles eased past Fort Kent last Wednesday, 23-9, before thrashing Wisdom two days later, 17-1. Against the Warriors, LCS/MSSM sprayed 20 hits and were led by Jackie Peers (two RBI) and Kassee Albert, who had four each. Morganne Emery notched three and had two RBI.
The Eagles are in the midst of a busy stretch, playing four games in seven days. The big one is Monday’s clash against the Houlton Shiretowners, who are in third place in Class C. The game will be played in Houlton at 4 p.m.
The Caribou girls are now 1-8 after suffering a 15-2 five-inning loss at home to Presque Isle Thursday. Rachel Soucy had a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth to allow the Vikes to avoid getting shut out for the fourth time this season.
Also in softball, Southern Aroostook beat Fort Fairfield last Wednesday, 12-4, but the Tigers bounced back for a 7-4 win over Washburn Friday. FF is 4-4 and in 11th place in the division. The Beavers are winless on the season, having lost last Wednesday to East Grand/GHCA, 5-0, in a contest played at Houlton.
On the baseball diamond, the Washburn Beavers defeated East Grand/GHCA on the road, 15-3, last Wednesday. Washburn owns a 4-2 mark and is in seventh place in Class D North.
LCS/MSSM is 5-3 and in ninth place in coach Pierre Huntress’s debut season. The Eagles split two games, downing Wisdom Friday, 20-5, two days after being doubled up by Fort Kent, 12-6. In the victory, Matthew Pelkey homered to lead the Eagles.
