The Tigers have a 6-1 mark at the midway point of the season, good for third place overall. FF trails only Penobscot Valley of Howland and Shead of Eastport.
Fort Fairfield played just one game last week, recording a 10-0 victory over Southern Aroostook last Wednesday. Carter Bruce fired a two-hit shutout while going the distance on the mound for the winners. Dalton Cassidy scored four times and had a pair of singles, while Jon Bernard doubled twice and Ryan Player also had two hits. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth due to the 10-run rule, with Josh Ricker activating it with a run-scoring single.
The Ashland girls were defeated in both games they played, but are at 5-3 and in sixth place in the division. The Hornets fell at Southern Aroostook last Tuesday, 21-7, and the following afternoon lost at home to Madawaska, 20-10. In the game against the Owls, Laura Sturgeon belted a three-run homer and added a pair of singles. Morgan Doughty contributed three hits.
The Presque Isle girls extended their winning streak to seven games after a 15-2 five-inning win at Caribou Thursday. The Wildcats are in 10th place in Class B North with their 7-4 mark and don’t play again until next Tuesday, May 24 when the host Houlton, one of the top teams in Class C.
PI scored five times in the fourth inning and added five more in the fifth to put the game away. Alyssa Trombley was the offensive leader with three hits, including a triple, and she drove in four runs. Lydia Miller, Amy Seeley, Hailey Cameron, Sydney Thompson and Taylor Williams had two hits apiece as part of the 16-hit attack. Thompson shut out Caribou over the first four innings and allowed seven hits during her outing.
Also in softball, Southern Aroostook beat Fort Fairfield last Wednesday, 12-4, but the Tigers bounced back for a 7-4 win over Washburn Friday. FF is 4-4 and in 11th place in the division. The Beavers are winless on the season, having lost last Wednesday to East Grand/GHCA, 5-0, in a contest played at Houlton.
On the baseball diamond, the Washburn Beavers defeated East Grand/GHCA on the road, 15-3, last Wednesday. Washburn owns a 4-2 mark and is in seventh place in Class D North.
