CARIBOU, Maine — It is now on to the postseason for track athletes as the relatively short regular season officially came to an end this past week.

The first of three championship meets, the Aroostook County League Championships, take place this coming Thursday, May 19, in Caribou.

The following week, the PVC Small School Championships will be contested for those who have qualified from Houlton High School at Foxcroft Academy on May 28.

“The final regular season meet in Caribou provided a good snapshot of what the field of competition could potentially look like in both of those meets as several small PVC schools made the trip up to join the Aroostook County teams,” said coach Chris Rines.

Girls’ team scores from the meet were: 1, Caribou, 212; 2, Presque Isle, 110; 3, Fort Fairfield, 73; 4, Mattanawcook Academy, 57; 5, Houlton, 42; 6, Limestone/MSSM, 38; 7, Penquis, 31; 8, Fort Kent, 4; and 9, Sumner, 1.

Boys’ team scores were: 1, Caribou, 169; 2, Fort Fairfield, 98; 3, Presque Isle, 89; 4, Houlton, 78; 5, Mattanawcook Academy, 40; 6, Washburn, 36; 7, Limestone/MSSM, 28; 8, Fort Kent, 10; 9, Penquis Valley, 9; 10, Sumner, 7; 11, East Grand, 6; and 12, Greater Houlton Christian, 4.

In the girls’ meet, the Shires were again led on the track by Mia Hanning (24 points) and Rylee Warman (18) for 42 total team points.

Warman reached her new personal best in the 800 meter and set a new school record with her time of 2:37.14, which was good enough for first place.

Other athletes hitting bests for the season came from Kate Newman in the 1,600 meter racewalk (13:28.97, ninth place); Lexi Bartlett setting a new school record in the shot put with her throw of 23 feet, 8 inches (10th place); and Hannah Foley setting the new school record for the second week in a row in the discus at 70-5 (ninth place), just seven inches shy of PVC qualifying standards. Olivia Winslow made her first start of the year in the 1,600 crushing her previous time by 38 seconds with a time of 6:34.7 (eighth place).

Trevor Fronczak representing East Grand had breakout performances in each of the three events he took place in. Fronczak started the day out with career bests in the long jump landing a distance of 16-7.75 for seventh place.

Later his attention focused on the 1,600 where he would made a courageous effort against a Caribou runner finishing third by mere hundredths of a second. His time of 5:05.85 is a mere 0.85 seconds from a provisional bid to the state championships.

Fronczak ended his day with a bang in the javelin throwing 117-3. “He had only started throwing it this week and this was his first meet competing in the event,” Rines said. “The throw placed him in seventh and is 8-feet shy of a provisional state championship bid.”
