Young moves on to state tourney in singles

Denny Young has earned a trip to the state singles tournament.

The Presque Isle High School junior defeated Caribou’s Emerson Duplissie-Cyr in straight sets Thursday, 6-3, 6-3, to join Fort Kent’s Ryan Chasse and Caribou’s Ethan Plourde and Alec Cyr in the state event, which will be held beginning May 27, 2016 at Lewiston High School.
The qualifier was held at Caribou High School. Young went in as the No. 4 seed behind Chasse, Plourde and Cyr.
The Wildcats’ Andre Daigle and Byron Winslow won first-round matches Friday, with Daigle beating Fort Kent’s Rowan Stamp, 8-6, and No. 6 Winslow shutting out Houlton’s Devin Ivey, 8-0. But both lost in the bracket finals, with Daigle succumbing to Plourde, 6-3, 6-0, and Winslow falling short against Cyr, 6-3, 6-3.
On the girls’ side, Michelle Cawley and Sarah Morneault also reached the bracket finals, but Cawley, ranked third, was upset by No. 6 Ashley Matlock of Caribou, 3-6, 7-5 and 6-4. Morneault was seeded seventh and beat Van Buren’s Lindsay Gendreau, 8-0, before losing to Caribou’s Conner Spencer, 6-1, 6-2.
Sedona Lucas of the Wildcats also competed and lost to No. 5 Brooke Jandreau of Fort Kent.
Matlock and Spencer joined Viking teammate Gabrielle Marquis as qualifiers. The fourth to advance was Alexis Ouellette of Van Buren, who beat Jandreau to earn the spot.
Presque Isle is No. 6 in the girls’ Class B North standings with its 5-2 record, while the boys are 4-3 and in 10th. The top 12 teams make the post-season. The Wildcats swept past Houlton last Tuesday, with the girls winning 3-2 and the boys scoring a 5-0 victory.
PI faces a busy schedule with five matches to play over an eight-day stretch. The Wildcats played at Fort Kent Tuesday, had a doubleheader at Madawaska Thursday and play a doubleheader against different teams at home Tuesday, May 24, with Caribou in at 3:30 p.m. and Houlton at 5:30 p.m.
