PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A special Joint Information System/Joint Information Center training session will be held Thursday, June 30, 2016 at the Hampton Inn in Presque Isle.
The primary audience for this training is individuals who have public information responsibilities as their main job or as an auxiliary function at the state, tribal or local level of government.
The course will take place in the hotel’s conference room from 8:15 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Lunch and breaks will be provided.
As an incident expands in complexity, often multiple agencies, departments, and jurisdictions may be integrated into incident management activities both at the command and coordination levels. In a multiagency response, several public information officers may be assigned to the incident, requiring increased coordination.
The National Incident Management System, based on best practices, recommends that responders establish:
The Joint Information System, which provides the mechanism to organize, integrate and coordinate information to ensure timely, accurate, accessible and consistent messaging across multiple jurisdictions and/or disciplines, including the private sector and nongovernmental organizations.
The Joint Information Center (JIC), a central location that facilitates operation of the JIS to ensure coordination of public information during incidents that involve multiple agencies and/or jurisdictions. The incident command/unified command may use a JIC to support the gathering, verification, coordination, and dissemination of accurate, accessible and timely information.
This training will equip public information officers with the skills needed to establish and operate a JIS/JIC, and will impart a working knowledge of operational practices for performing public information duties within the multiagency coordination system.
Students traveling more than 50 miles from their place of work to attend are eligible for lodging at no cost.
