Memorial Day is Monday, May 30, 2016 and several communities in the Houlton Pioneer Times’ coverage area will be holding ceremonies to commemorate the day.
HOULTON
The Chester L. Briggs Post 47 of the American Legion in Houlton will host several events in honor of Memorial Day. At 9 a.m., veterans will gather at Soldiers’ Hill in the Evergreen Cemetery with welcoming remarks, a flag raising, opening prayer, laying of wreaths and firing squad with TAPS. Representatives from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 11 will also be participating.
At 10:30 a.m., veterans will form up for a short parade starting at the TD Bank parking lot on North Street. The group will march to the bridge where a prayer and laying of a wreath will take place.
The group will then proceed to Monument Park, where at 11 a.m. the Houlton High School band will perform, laying of wreaths will take place and speeches will be read. Following the ceremony, a lunch will be served at the Legion Post.
PATTEN
The Patten Area Woman’s Club is again sponsoring the Memorial Day parade in Patten on Monday, May 30 at 10 am. Veteran’s are invited to meet at Station St. before 10 am. The parade will start there and go to the cemetery for a service.
OAKFIELD
The Oakfield Memorial Day Parade, sponsored by the American Legion Post No. 52, will start at 10 a.m. on the Station Road. For more information, contact Richard Burton at 463-2684.
