Rain is needed — Rain is very much needed. It is reported that many forest fires are raging. Tuesday and Wednesday were very hot days, being 89 and 92 degrees in the shade respectively. Also, on the account of so many blossoms, some of the knowing ones predict a large crop of berries this season.
Successful trip — Dr. I.W.E. McLellan, H.E. Trainor and W.R. Lumbert, Esq., made a successful fishing trip to Bridgwater Saturday, returning home Sunday. They brought home 60 trout.
100 Years Ago — May 25, 1916
Potato acreage — It is estimated that fully 95 percent of Aroostook potato acreage is now planted. The total planted is said to be about 10 percent less than last year.
Presque Isle fire — Presque Isle was visited by a disastrous fire early this morning, with several stores and business places on Bridge Street being destroyed.
75 Years Ago — May 22, 1941
To flying school — Friends of Abe Daniels, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Daniels, will be pleased to learn of his appointment to the Naval Air Training School in Pensacola from his present training with the U.S. Marines. Daniels was the only one out of his entire bombing squadron of 15 to receive the appointment following a rigid physical and radio communication exam.
New traffic laws — Caribou’s new traffic ordinance will be placed in effect around the first of June, according to an announcement made by Chief of Police Lawrence Elliott. The principal change effected by the new ordinance places certain business streets of the town under a two-hour parking limit, while a 15-minute limit is in effect in front of the post office.
50 Years Ago — May 25, 1966
Discount store to locate here — One of the major discount chains in New England, Mill Outlet Stores, will open a large store in Caribou in the fall. Arthur Karp, owner and president, said the property and other local negotiations have been completed and he expected a groundbreaking ceremony would take place on an Access Highway site within a few days. The store will have 120-foot frontage and will include ladies, girls, children, mens and hardware departments, etc.
Colorful parade planned — The Maine State Police and Caribou Fire Department will lead the colorful Memorial Day Parade here Monday, starting at 10 a.m. at the Methodist Church. The procession will proceed through Sweden Street to Monument Park for appropriate memorial exercises, after which VFW units will proceed to the Evergreen and Catholic cemeteries.

New wing commander — Citing teamwork and pride of accomplishment as two of the most valuable principles of military service, Capt. Bruce Blaisdell, master of ceremonies, opened the changes of command ceremonies at Loring Air Force Base. Col. Gary N. Schneider became the 30th wing commander of the 42nd Bombardment Wing at Loring. Schneider replaced Col. Terry A. Burke, who was reassigned as senior airfare seminar director at the U.S. Air Force War College.
Chapman named manager — Peoples Heritage Bank announced the promotion of Karen Chapman from assistant manager to banking center manager at the bank’s Caribou branch. Chapman, who had six years banking experience, graduated from Caribou High School and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
