Caribou, to be or not to be

To the editor:

It’s time for the residents of Caribou to decide if their city is worth fighting for or simply let its businesses close, its museums shutter their doors, and the secessionists tear apart anything that remains.

On a recent visit, I was reminded that the Historical Society is hanging on by a thread, the Nylander Museum is on a respirator, the Chamber of Commerce has left to join the Aroostook Chamber in Presque Isle, and the secession movement is still alive.

While I realize the “good old days” are gone, I don’t believe the City of Caribou should give in or give up.

My thoughts are that local businesses need to unite and challenge each other to meet the needs of residents. A “Buy Local” effort should be promoted and supported by everyone. Thursday’s on Sweden should represent not only local non- profits but the business community and its small business owners.

Residents and taxpayers need to support their city. People need to shop in Caribou, be involved with City Boards and Committees, volunteer in schools, take an active role in a non-profit, a church group or their own community-focused project.

I’ll be in Caribou many times this summer and I plan to do what I can to help. Caribou is my hometown!

Finally, it’s time to stop whining about what used to be, stop blaming others for what is, and start working together for a new and brighter future.
