The group of ladies known as “The Happy Losers” had four members that were celebrating a birthday during the month of May, and so on May 11 following the weigh-in and short meeting, all went for breakfast at the Brookside restaurant in Smyrna to honor the birthdays of Dottie Rand, Loretta Bouchard, Shirley Sides and Brenda Raymond.

We arrived about 9:15 a.m. and were greeted at the door by favorite waitress, Kim, who has served the group a number of times in the past, and who, despite being very busy, did another great job. All enjoyed their breakfast and were home by 11, planning to do it again sometime in the future.

The weather is gradually getting a little warmer, but I still have a lot of birds (and squirrels) into my feeders every day. Since the snowstorm on the 16th, I haven’t seen the cardinals; I hope they are still around the area and will show up soon.

I still have a pile of both male and female finch, but I think now that they are outnumbered by the swallows. There are many different types of swallows and it’s hard to say which ones are at my feeders, but there sure are lots of them, all flitting in and out of the feeders and in and out of the cedar tree.

I did have one rose-breasted grosbeak the other day. I used to have quite a lot of grosbeaks but this year, so far anyway, there are very few of them around.

I was happy to see three deer the other evening over by the woods, and the two younger ones here having a great time leaping and chasing one another around for awhile, then, whoosh, all darted off into the woods. The grass is growing faster and there’s more to graze on, so hopefully they will continue to show up during the summer.
