Eagle girls, FF boys continue consistent play on the diamond

With four victories each, the LCS/MSSM softball team and the Fort Fairfield baseball team continued their solid regular seasons and have put themselves in good position for the upcoming playoffs.

Both teams hold 10-1 records, which has the Eagle girls in sixth place in the Class C North Heal Point standings and the Tiger boys all the way up to the No. 1 slot in the Class D North region.

In softball, the Eagles began their big week with an 11-4 win at Fort Fairfield last Tuesday. What followed were lopsided wins over both Hodgdon and Washburn before Monday’s 13-9 decision over fellow Class C team Houlton.

Senior third baseman Jackie Peers went 4 for 5, including a double and a triple and three RBI, in the win over Fort Fairfield and then she clubbed two homers in the home victory over the Beavers Friday, while Jessica Lindsey was the hitting star against the Hawks a day earlier with a single and a pair of doubles.

Delaney Rossignol did the job on the mound by allowing a total of seven runs in those first three contests. She limited Washburn to just one hit the entire game.

On the baseball field, the Tigers’ impressive run saw them outscore their opponents by a 62-5 margin. Included was an 11-1 win over LCS/MSSM last Tuesday, a 10-3 triumph Friday over Central Aroostook, a 12-1 victory over East Grand/GHCA Saturday and Monday’s 29-0 blitz over Madawaska. Three of the four games were played at home.

Jared Harvey, Carter Bruce and Jon Bernard handled a bulk of the pitching duties and surrendered very few scoring opportunities. Bernard tossed a no-hitter against the Owls in the latest win.

Several contributed offensively during the stretch. Isaac Cyr had three singles and four RBI against the Eagles, Ryan Player had two hits and three RBI and Dalton Cassidy scored four times against CA, Malcolm Langner and Bernard stroked two singles each and both knocked in a pair of runs against East Grand/GHCA and Player collected five hits against the Owls.

The Caribou baseball team improved its playoff chances by winning the first game of a doubleheader Saturday against Mount Desert Island and then shutting out Fort Kent Monday.

The Vikes currently stand at 5-8 and hold the 12th position in Class B North, with the top 12 advancing to the post-season. Caribou hosts Old Town in a crucial doubleheader Saturday before wrapping up the season next Wednesday at Presque Isle.

Caribou’s victory over MDI in game one took a late-game comeback. Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, Camden Huck scored on a wild pitch to get to within a run. In their half of the sixth, the Vikings took the lead by scoring twice, with the winning run coming across courtesy of a Josh Quist squeeze bunt. Gunnar Bondeson was brilliant on the mound and earned the win.

MDI took game two, 8-1, as Trojan pitcher Seth Clark scattered five hits in a dominating effort. Michael Hunter led Caribou with two of the hits.

Jacob Burby and Tyler Dombroski combined for a no-hitter Monday as the Vikings blanked the Warriors, 6-0. Hunter had a double and two singles, while Justin Ouellette and Dombroski added three singles each. Earlier in the week, Caribou fell at Houlton, 10-1, managing only three hits off Shiretowner ace Ryan Dee.

The Caribou softball team beat Houlton last Wednesday, 7-4, for just its second win of the year. The Vikes scored three runs in the third-inning, beginning with Jaelynn Doody’s inside-the-park home run. Maddie Doucette singled and Rachel Soucy tripled her home, with Soucy coming across on an RBI groundout by Kaytlin Waldemarson.

Doucette and Searra Herbert contributed RBI singles later in the game and Soucy went the distance on the mound, striking out seven and allowing just four hits.

The Vikings were swept Saturday by a previously-winless MDI team The scores were 13-3 in the first game and 5-2 in the second.

The LCS/MSSM baseball team lost all four of its games, but with four games remaining hold the No. 10 position in the Class C North standings, with the top 11 moving on to the playoffs.

The Washburn Beavers’ baseball team beat Central Aroostook, LCS/MSSM and Ashland last week to improve to 7-2 and move into fourth place in Class D. Jarrett Olson slammed two doubles and a single, McCall Turner ripped a triple and a double and Caleb Thompson notched three singles in the most recent win, which came Monday at Ashland.

The FF softball team had a winless week, falling to East Grand/GHCA and Madawaska in addition to the loss to LCS/MSSM, while the Washburn girls are still searching for their first win. They were narrowly defeated Monday at Ashland, coming up on the short end of a 10-9 final.
