LIMESTONE, Maine — The LCS/MSSM Eagles have built up their track and field roster, with 33 athletes competing, and coach Kirk Cote has been encouraged with the popularity of the program.
“Most of they are trying the sport for the first time, but there is a lot of diversity,” Cote said, “so we have enough athletes and talent to have one in pretty much every event, which is nice.
“I believe the team’s biggest strength is the leadership that is being shown by the returning track members in helping new members,” he added.
Sophomore Andrea Rawson and senior Leah Kihn are girls who have already established state-qualifying or provisional marks in the discus, while junior Allison Johnson has made it in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs. Rawson has also reached qualifying marks in the shot put, while junior Emma Vannorsdall has qualified in both the shot put and javelin.
For the boys, senior Sam Carignan has qualified in both the shot put and the discus and Ahmed Beshir has done it in the 800, while senior Keith Languet, in the 800 and the javelin, and junior Paddy Keith-Hardy in the 1,600 and 800, have also had stellar seasons.
The 4×100 relay team of Beshir, James Cyr, Samuel LaChance and Keith-Hardy picked up the Aroostook League championship Thursday with a time of 9:34.44.
The state meet is June 4 at Foxcroft Academy.
Rounding out the LCS/MSSM girls’ roster are Sadie Allen, Bailey Chalmers, Amanda Chen, Gabrielle Collins, Anna Foo, Naomi Kihn, Sophie Moore, Annette Mubang, Lily Tedford, Hannah Zimmerman and Samantha Zwecker.
Other boys’ team members are Garrett Barb, Ryan Fitzmaurice, Scott Gilley, David Govoni, Marsden Jacques, Chris Kenney, Dalton Kleinert, Atticus Maloney, Tyler Simmons, Oliver Wainman and Lin Zou.
“The group I have this year all want to get better and are willing to work for it,” Cote said.
