Season winds down for tennis players

The regular season was slated to come to a close Tuesday for boys and girls tennis players from Houlton as the Shires traveled to Presque Isle for a makeup game.

In the final year under the guidance of longtime coach Jean Maunder, the Houlton girls have had a fair amount of success on the courts, while the boys’ squad failed to win a match, but showed steady improvement on the year.

The Houlton girls (5-6, 51.6667 Heal Points) are seventh in Class C North and have a good chance at hosting a playoff match. The postseason begins Tuesday, May 31, with a preliminary round. If the Shires stay as the No. 7 seed, they would host the No. 10 seed (currently Woodland) in a prelim match.

For the boys, Houlton (0-11, no points) is in 17th and will not be in the playoffs this year.
