Wildcat tennis teams appear playoff-bound

The Presque Isle tennis teams solidified their chances of advancing to the post-season following three more victories each last week.

The ’Cat boys pulled off a 3-2 victory over Fort Kent last Wednesday. The key win came in No. 3 singles as Andre Daigle, a freshman, battled from behind to defeat David Roy in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-5). Byron Winslow in second singles and the doubles combo of Mason Young and Tyler Ayotte were PI’s others winners.
The Wildcats also swept past Madawaska Thursday, 5-0, 5-0.
For the girls, Presque Isle topped Fort Kent last Wednesday, 4-1, as Michelle Cawley and Sedona Lucas pulled out close victories in singles. Sarah Morneault blanked her opponent in second singles and the doubles team of Miranda Bragan and Anna Robinson also recorded a win.
The Wildcat girls swept Madawaska the following afternoon, 5-0 and 4-1. The singles players swept past their Owl opponents and the Bragan-Robinson combo prevailed easily twice. The No. 2 doubles team of Savannah Levesque and Ellie Goheen split their two matches.
By placing among the top 12, both Wildcat squads will compete in the preliminary round of the playoffs set for Tuesday, May 31. The boys were 7-3 and in ninth place in Class B North heading into Tuesday’s scheduled home doubleheader against Caribou and Houlton. The girls stood at 8-2 entering the two matches, claiming the No. 6 position in the Heal Point standings.
The state singles tournament gets underway Friday in Lewiston and Presque Isle’s Denny Young is part of the boys’ bracket following his victory at the May 14 qualifier in Caribou.
