DANFORTH — East Grand School’s eighth-grade girls had the opportunity to explore career options at the Totally Trades Event in Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle.
East Grand students Lacie Gilman, Ericka Russell and Jordyn Cowger spent the day learning about skilled labor traditionally performed by men, such as carpentry, plumbing, and heavy equipment operation.
Women who have made successful careers in traditionally male jobs told stories about their experiences as women in a male-dominated role. The girls learned that they did need not limit themselves to certain careers.
The students had the opportunity to get their hands dirty assembling their very own toolboxes. The girls emerged from the conference with a toolbox, a little extra confidence, and the knowledge that their career choices are limited only by their education and interests.
