FORT KENT — The TRIO Student Support Services Program at the University of Maine at Fort Kent held its eighth annual recognition banquet on April 28 to honor students involved in the TRIO program.
UMFK Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs Tanya Sleeper provided the welcome address.
The banquet’s keynote speaker was Christy Daggett, senior manager for the Aroostook County Action Program’s Workforce Development. She shared her experience with first-generation and low-income students and the benefits of higher education. Daggett has experience in public service and federal grant coordination, and resides in Aroostook County with her family.
Those awarded from the local area included Carlee Pinette and Kathryn Sharp, both of Caribou, who were recognized for their individual support and student work as peer tutors, note takers or supplemental instruction leaders. They received certificates.
The following local TRIO students were recognized and presented with their Student Support Services cords, which they will wear at graduation. The graduates-to-be include: Chelsea Butler and Carlee Pinette, both of Caribou; Kathryn Sharp, Mapleton; Danielle Tracy, Fort Fairfield; and Vessa Villarreal, Limestone.
The Student Support Services Program’s focus is to help participants persist in school and graduate from UMFK. They provide services to enhance students’ academic success, personal and social skills. TRIO is a nationwide, federally-funded organization committed to providing educational opportunity for all Americans regardless of race, ethnic background, or economic circumstance.
