Katahdin HS names honor part students

STACYVILLE, Maine — Katahdin Middle-High School principal Jon Porter has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2016. Sophie Vetter has been named valedictorian, while Molly Cunningham was chosen as salutatorian, while honor students are Tyson Porter and Courtney Stevens.

Vetter is the daughter of Ralph and Bridgit Vetter. She plans to attend Husson University in Bangor and pursue a degree as a registered nurse. Vetter is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Performing Arts Club of Katahdin, and Prom Committee. She was Class President in 2014-15 and Class Secretary from 2012-14.

Vetter has participated in varsity soccer, JV basketball, varsity basketball and softball. She was also the captain of the soccer team in 2014 and 2015. Vetter participated in All-Aroostook Chorus, All-Aroostook Soccer and also was recognized by the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Maine. She has volunteered for the Special Olympics, American Red Cross Blood Drive, and the Celebration of Life.

Cunningham is the daughter of Robert and Christine Cunningham. She plans to attend Husson University in Bangor and pursue a degree in occupational therapy. She has participated as captain in varsity soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Cunningham has participated in soccer, basketball, volleyball and softball all four years.

Cunningham has earned athletic awards in soccer, volleyball, basketball and softball. She also participated in the All-Aroostook Band. She was a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, Class Officer, Youth Advocacy, Prom Committee, Yearbook Committee, TRIO, chorus, and band. She has volunteered for Special Olympics, Celebration of Life, American Red Cross Blood Drive, Vacation Bible School along with other events at her church, and the Good Shepherd Food Bank.

Porter is the son of John and Holly Porter. He plans to attend the University of Maine and major in wildlife ecology. Porter was Class President in 2012-2014. He has participated in varsity soccer, basketball, volleyball and baseball for four years.

Porter earned All-Aroostook League Awards in soccer, basketball and baseball. He also earned All-Aroostook Scholar Athlete Award, Penobscot Valley Conference Award in basketball, PVC Scholar Athlete Award, PVC All Defensive Team and PVC Honorable Mention Award in baseball.

Stevens is the daughter of Theresa and Tory Stevens. She plans to attend Eastern Maine Community College and pursue a degree in medical assisting. Stevens has participated in varsity soccer, basketball and softball. She was also All-Aroostook Volleyball All-Star in 2015. Courtney has earned All-Aroostook League Awards in soccer, basketball and softball, and PVC for soccer and basketball. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Prom Committee. Stevens has volunteered at American Red Cross Blood Drives and the Strawberry Festivals.
