Rain does little to dampen New Sweden’s walk to school event

NEW SWEDEN, Maine — Despite the rain, about three quarters of New Sweden students walked to school Friday morning.

Escorted by Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department personnel and a few parents, students were dropped off at the beginning of the Jepson Road, which connects to Route 161. From there, they had about one mile to walk to the school.

New Sweden Music Teacher Jennifer Holmes was pleasantly surprised by the number of participants.

“It turned out really well because about 75 percent of the students participated, which is a really good number considering the rain,” Holmes said. “We even had about 10 parents walking. It was a real community event. I thought for sure it would have been cancelled, but these students are troopers.”

This is the first time New Sweden has held a walk-to-school event, which is part of their efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle for students and their families.
