115 Years Ago — May 29, 1901
Pleasant graduation — A very pleasant reception was tendered with the graduating class of the high school. Members of the alumni and school were requested to form for a march. Music was furnished by Palmer’s orchestra, and a most enjoyable social time was participated in by all present.
Hanging baskets — Hanging May baskets is a favorite amusement with the young people in this section during the month of May.
100 Years Ago — June 1, 1916
Cultural exchange — A man walked into one of the Caribou stores one day last week and inquired for certain things using the German language. The clerk replied in French. A bystander, who could understand the last named tongue, repeated the question in Swedish; another party, who understood Swedish again, repeated the question, using the Spanish language. Of course, the conversation had to be translated into English for the benefit of others who were present, making five languages spoken within a few minutes.
75 Years Ago — May 29, 1941
New store to open — The mail order office and sample store of the Sears, Roebuck Company will open its doors to patrons of Caribou and vicinity Wednesday, June 4. Located in the F.L. Oak store at 23 Sweden Street, the quarters have been undergoing extensive redecorations both outside and inside, for the past several days by the S.W. Collins Co. A similar store is to be opened in Presque Isle on Thursday, June 5.
Interesting visitor — Caribou hosted an “interesting” visitor this past week. Fan mail artist of the Walt Disney Studios, Robert S. Reed, gave an interesting talk before the students of the Sincock School Friday, sketching pictures of Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse and other characters and impersonating the seven Dwarfs from the movie “Snow White”.
50 Years Ago — June 1, 1966
“Memento” — A project that was begun several months ago was culminated with the erection of a Nike Ajax missile on the lawn of the General Carter Memorial Armory in Caribou. The Nike Ajax was presented to the community as a reminder of the men who were attached to the 3rd Missile Battalion during the years the unit was stationed in the area.
Sincock Elementary principal retiring — Ernest Pelletier, principal at Sincock Elementary School, who is retiring after teaching for 45 years, will be honored at an open house at the Sincock School.
25 Years Ago – May 29, 1991
Memorial Day ceremony draws crowd — About 200 people attended the Memorial Day ceremony held Monday at the Lister-Knowlton VFW Post 9389. The ceremony was held inside because of the rain that also caused the parade to be cancelled. Several people spoke, including Carroll Saunders of the American Legion Post 15 in Caribou, Howard Kenney, American Legion chaplain and John W. Wallace of the local Vietnam Veterans of America chapter.
Employee of month — Trudy Violette has been selected as Employee of the Quarter at Caribou’s Cary Medical Center for the second quarter of the year. Violette was born in Presque Isle and grew up in Caribou. She attended the Caribou schools, worked as a candy striper at Cary during junior high school, and graduated from CHS in 1982. Violette started at Cary in 1984 in patient registration before switching to the billing department.
