100 Years Ago – May 31, 1916

 One day only! — Four hundred people employed and carrying over 200 foreign and domestic animals, is the statement made by Mr. J. C. Tracy, agent for the Sparks Shows, who was in town last Saturday making arrangements for the appearance of this big circus here on Monday, July 3. The strange colony of people, handsome horses, rare wild animals and the golden caravans are scheduled to arrive here during the early morning hours of the above date in their own special trains from Presque Isle, where they will exhibit the day before.

 

  75 Years Ago – May 29, 1941

 Poppies — The Poppy Day sale on Saturday, May 24, sponsored by the Chester L. Briggs Post, American Legion Auxiliary in charge of Mrs. John Chapman, was the most successful ever held here. There were 1,600 poppies sold.

 Honors — The honor parts for the eighth-grade graduation of the Roosevelt Grammar School in Smyrna Mills were announced this week. Gene Drew, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Drew, is valedictorian, while Colleen Stewart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Stewart, is salutatorian.

 

50 Years Ago – June 1, 1966

 Last graduation — Ricker Classical Institute’s 118th and final commencement was held at Putnam Gymnasium. The motto was “From An End, A Beginning.” The opening processional included 44 graduating seniors and 18 postgraduates. The Rev. Clovis Frame delivered the invocation followed by a choral presentation by the Ricker Ten under the direction of Paul Paige.

 Memorial services — The Chester L Briggs Post American Legion sponsored the Memorial Day ceremonies Sunday afternoon at Evergreen Cemetery. The program included brief talks, music by the Salvation Army Band, and the laying of the wreaths by the Legion, Royal Canadian Legion, World War I veterans, VFW and their auxiliary units.

 

25 Years Ago – May 29, 1991

 They have arrived — The Up with People cast arrived in Houlton Wednesday with sirens blowing and horns blasting out a welcome to the youthful array of smiling faces and waving arms. Houlton area residents housed the cast during their stay. They presented two nights of music entitled, “Rhythm of the World.”

 Dreamer — Tessa Campbell received honorable mention in the state Dreamers and Doers contest. Campbell was chosen by the Houlton High School staff to represent the junior class in the state contest. The Walt Disney World National Dreamers and Doers Program is a student recognition program. They honor students who exemplify the 4 C’s —curiosity, confidence, courage and constancy. Campbell is the daughter of Barry and Debbie Campbell of Littleton.
