All four local softball squads are playoff bound

The regular season comes to a close on Wednesday and a number of teams are heading for playoff contests thanks to successful efforts on the diamond.

Houlton (11-4) is fourth in the Class C North region with one game left on the season. The Shires finish up Wednesday hosting Lee Academy. If Houlton remains as the No. 4 seed, it will earn a first-round bye and host a quarterfinal game against the No. 5 seed (currently Mattanawcook Academy) on Thursday, June 9.

In Class D North, Southern Aroostook (9-4) is currently the No. 2 seed, while Katahdin (10-3) is third; Hodgdon (6-7) is eighth; and East Grand (7-7) is 11th. All four squads are playoff bound. The top three squads receive a first-round bye, while fourth through 13th must play a preliminary game on Tuesday, June 7.

Houlton 6, Limestone 0 — At Limestone Monday, the Shires avenged an earlier season loss with a 6-0 shutout over the Eagles. Individual game results were not reported.

Deer Isle-Stonington 1 Katahdin 13 — In the first game of a doubleheader at Stacyville Saturday, Georgia Landry, Molly Cunningham, and Kelsey Hamm each recorded two RBIs to lead the Cougars to victory.

Amy Friedell singled twice and scored the lone run for the Mariners while Lillian Gray also had two singles.

Deer Isle-Stonington 0, Katahdin 14 — In the second game of a doubleheader at Stacyville, Kaycee Cintron pitched a complete-game shutout, giving up only three hits en route to the win for Katahdin.

Kendra Patterson and Lindsay Drew each recorded two hits and scored twice for the 10-3 Cougars.

Abigail Stinson had two of the three Mariner hits and Haley Hardy chipped in a hit. Deer Isle falls to 1-13.

Houlton 20, Calais 0 — At Calais Friday, Kristen Graham pitched a no-hitter in five innings to give the Shiretowners the victory. She struck out five. Graham aided her own cause with a double, single and an RBI.

Elisabeth Ward sparked the Shires with a grand slam and double, while Aspen Flewelling chipped in with a double, single and two RBIs.

Schenck 5, Katahdin 6 — At Stacyville Thursday, Kelsey Hamm and Kaycee Cintron made spectacular catches in the seventh inning against Schenck’s comeback attempt to preserve Katahdin’s eighth win of the season.

Georgia Landry led the offensive attack with two singles and two runs scored.

For Schenck, Taylor McLaughlin led the way with three hits and an RBI. Allison Noodin and Bailey Porter each recorded two singles for the Wolverines.

Southern Aroostook 4, Ashland 7 — At Ashland Thursday, Cassidy Pelletier had two singles and three RBIs to propel the Hornets past Southern Aroostook. Micayla Driscoll hit a two-run double in the decisive fifth inning and Caitlin Paradis singled twice for the Hornets.

Lily Leavitt led the way for the Warriors with a double and a two-run single. Katie Stevens added two singles.

Hodgdon 8, Washburn 6 — At Washburn May 25, Grace Gramm and Lexi McGuire each had two hits and an RBI to pace Hodgdon to victory.

For the Beavers, Grace Braley went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

East Grand 5, Highview Christian Academy 9 — At Charleston May 24, Cece Allard had two hits and drove in five runs to lead Highview Christian Academy past East Grand. Cassidy Lessner had three RBI’s for the 4-6 Knights and Kelsea McDonald struck out 13 batters from the circle.

For East Grand, Jenny Crone drove in three runs and Haleigh Shay had five strikeouts.
