HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton girls tennis team finished the regular season with a 6-6 record, which placed the Shires sixth in the Class C North region. Houlton hosted No. 11 Calais (6-6) in a preliminary match Tuesday afternoon.
If the Shires were successful, the team advances to the quarterfinals, where it will face No. 3 Penobscot Valley (9-3) of Howland on Thursday.
Houlton did not face Calais or Penobscot Valley during the regular season.
“The girls did well this year,” coach Jean Maunder said. “It was an excellent season for Lauren Hogan, who finished with season record 8-4 playing first doubles.”
The Houlton boys struggled in what was a rebuilding year, finishing with an 0-12 record.
“It was a tough season for the boys,” coach Maunder said. “It was a growing year. It’s hard when you lose your top three players [to graduation] and have a very young team. They tried their best and learned a lot.”
In the final match of the regular season, Houlton played its best match of the year, beating Presque Isle 3-2. The individual results, with Houlton players listed first, were: in singles, Becca Mooers beat Michelle Cawley, 8-4; Piper Flewelling lost to Sarah Morneault, 6-8; and June Choi defeated Sedona Lucas, 9-7.
In doubles, Hogan and Morgan Nelson beat Miranda Bragan and Anna Robinson,8-2; and Emily Miller and Nadja Messerschmitt lost to Emily Colligan and Ellie Goheen, 0-9.
