PI tennis teams make playoffs

The Wildcat varsity tennis teams have earned spots in the Class B North post-season.

The Presque Isle girls are in sixth place and are home for today’s preliminary playoff match against No. 11 Winslow, which begins at 5 p.m. The Wildcats enter with an 8-4 record and the Black Raiders are at 5-7. They did not meet in the regular season.
The winner advances to play No. 3 John Bapst in Bangor Thursday in the quarterfinals.
The PI boys, at 8-4 and in ninth place, squared off against No. 8 Mount Desert Island (7-5) Tuesday at MDI. The Trojans won their lone regular season meeting on May 7, 2016, 4-1.
No. 1 John Bapst, at 12-0, will meet the winner of the PI-MDI match Thursday in quarterfinal play.
Presque Isle wrapped up its regular season last Tuesday, playing both Caribou and Houlton at home.
The Vikings recorded a sweep over Presque Isle in the early match.
In the Caribou girls’ 5-0 victory, Gabrielle Marquis beat Michelle Cawley in first singles, 8-1, while Conner Spencer and Ashley Matlock each recorded 8-0 triumphs over Sarah Morneault and Sedona Lucas, respectively, in the other singles matches.
Ciara Richards and Danielle Hanson doubled up on PI’s Miranda Bragan and Anna Robinson, 8-4, in No. 1 doubles, while Hailey Holmquist and Kyra Thibeault blanked the Wildcats’ Emily Colligan and Ellie Goheen, 8-0.
The Caribou boys claimed a 4-1 win as Ethan Plourde bested PI’s Denny Young in first singles, 8-2, and Alec Cyr tripped up Byron Winslow of the ’Cats in second singles, 8-4.
The Vikings’ top doubles team of Austin Scott and Bailey Griffeth stopped Presque Isle’s Colin Daigle and Jordan Bonville, 8-4, and the No. 2 doubles team of Austin Cheplic and Gabe Rand also prevailed, topping PI’s Mason Young and Tyler Ayotte, 8-1.
Caribou’s only loss came in third singles as Emerson Duplissie-Cyr fell to the Wildcats’ Andre Daigle, 8-3.
The PI boys beat Houlton, 5-0, while the girls were beaten by the Shires, 3-2.
Young and Winslow won their contested singles matches, while Andre Daigle took his by forfeit. Colin Daigle and Bonville managed an 8-3 win in first doubles, while Young and Ayotte claimed an 8-0 win.
The Presque Isle girls’ winners were Morneault, who defeated Piper Flewelling in second singles, 8-6, and the doubles team of Colligan and Goheen, who eased past Emily Miller and Nadja Messerschmitt, 8-0.
Cawley lost to Becca Moores, 8-4, Lucas was nipped by June Choi, 9-7 and the doubles combo of Bragan and Robinson fell to Lauren Hagan and Morgan Nelson, 8-2.
In the state boys’ singles tournament played Friday, Young lost in straight sets to J.D. Souza of Brunswick, 6-3, 6-2, in the opening round which took place in Portland.
