PI’s Koch wins running competition at PVCs
HAMPDEN, Maine — Tori Koch picked up Presque Isle’s lone individual victory at the Penobscot Valley Conference large school championship meet held Friday.
Koch won the the 400-meter dash in 1:03.65.
The Presque Isle girls were sixth (45 points) and the boys were seventh (31 points) in the final team standings at the meet. The Brewer girls and the Foxcroft Academy boys claimed the team titles.
Koch was also second in the 100 in 12.97 seconds, just 4/100ths of a second behind the race winner. The Wildcat girls turned in strong performances in the throwing events, as Regan Nelson was the runner-up in the shot put at 33 feet, 9 inches and was fourth in the discus at 93 feet, 8 inches. Skylar Vogel was second in the javelin at 93 feet, 3 inches.
Mandy Graham placed fifth in the 3,200-meter run and sixth in the 1,600 and Maddie Wing was fifth in the racewalk.
The Wildcats’ best placement in a relay came in the 4×800 as the team of Isabelle Jackson, Emily Sjoberg, Madison Jandreau and Graham was fifth in in a time of 12:03.87.
For the boys, PI’s Trace Cyr registered a runner-up performance in the 400 in 53.2 seconds, which coach Mike Waugh said “is really fast, especially for a freshman.” He is ranked sixth in the state in the event in Class B.
Connor Murchison was second in the high jump at 5 feet, 6 inches and both Cyr and Murchison are part of the 4×400 relay team that took fourth place in 3:48.91 and qualified for the state meet. They are joined by Chan Villatora and Kyler Caron.
Jonah Clark was third (8:33.68) and Owen McQuarrie fifth in the racewalk. Parker Lambert placed fifth in the 110 hurdles and Villatora was sixth in the 100.
“Everyone put up some great performances,” Waugh said of his team’s effort.
The Class B state meet will be held Saturday at Mount Desert Island. Aroostook’s County’s Class C teams Fort Fairfield and Washburn will compete that same day at Foxcroft Academy.
