Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met May 31 and the guest speakers were Pam Frank, Joy Barresi Saucier and Jim McKenney, all of TAMC. They spoke about The County Dialysis Center in Presque Isle. It is the only non-profit dialysis center in Maine and has received a National 5-Star Quality Care rating.
Started in 1997, there were 6 stations for 12 patients completing 1,728 treatments a year. Currently there are 12 stations for 72 patients completing 11,232 treatments. The center allows patients to have their three times weekly treatments much closer to home. Treatments typically take four to five hours daily.
The space for the center has grown from 3,900 square feet to 7,000. They serve patients from around Aroostook County — nine percent come from the north, 19 percent from the south with 72 percent living in the central Aroostook area.
The center is currently working on completing a 2.1 million dollar upgrade to the center. At this time, only $211,000 remains to be raised. Funds have come from philanthropic and private donations. They are looking for gifts and grants to raise the rest.
