Despite the move up to Class C this year, the LCS/MSSM softball team put itself in good position heading into the playoffs.
The Eagles, coached by Jamie Albert, turned in a stellar 13-2 record to finish only below undefeated Narraguagus and No. 2 Bucksport in the final standings. The squad will host the winner of the prelim game between No. 6 Orono and No. 11 Calais in the quarterfinal round Thursday.
LCS/MSSM lost only two games all season, one to Ashland and the other to Houlton. The Eagles finished up regular season play last week with comfortable 15-3 and 17-6 victories over Hodgdon and Fort Kent, respectively.
The Eagle baseball team snuck into the post-season despite losing seven of its final eight contests. The team’s 6-10 record was good enough for 11th place, just 1.5 points ahead of No. 12 Sumner.
Pierre Huntress, the squad’s first-year coach, took his team to Bucksport Tuesday for a preliminary playoff game against the No. 6 Golden Bucks. The winner takes on No. 3 Central on Thursday in the quarters.
The Fort Fairfield baseball and softball teams and the Washburn baseball teams all earned playoff berths as well. The Tiger baseball team is No. 3 and the Beavers are No. 4 in Class D North. Those rankings were solidifed following Fort Fairfield’s 15-4 win at Washburn in the mutual finale played last Wednesday. Sophomore Jared Harvey got the win on the mound and clubbed a pair of home runs to lead the winning attack.
The Tigers now await the winner of the prelim game between No. 6 Bangor Christian and No. 11 Woodland. The quarterfinal will be played in Fort Fairfield Thursday.
Washburn hosted No. 13 Schenck in a prelim matchup played Tuesday on the Beavers’ home field. The winner will take on Central Aroostook in the next round.
The Fort Fairfield girls go into the playoffs as the No. 13 seed with their 5-8 record. They played at fourth-seeded Katahdin in a prelim Tuesday. Washburn beat FF last Wednesday, 11-1, for its first victory of the season, but the Beavers will sit out of the playoffs.
Neither of the Caribou teams advanced. The baseball team lost at Presque Isle last Wednesday, 4-1, giving the final berth to the Wildcats. The squad went 5-11 and finished in 14th, while the Viking girls, beaten by a score of 21-3 at Presque Isle, turned in a 3-13 record which put them in 15th in the standings.
