FF rec registration begins
FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Registration begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Fort Fairfield Community Pool for summer programs offered through the recreation and parks department.
Baseball programs offered are T-ball, minor league, major league, youth all-stars and Pony League. Junior girls softball, MRPA track and field, tennis and golf are other options, as well as mountain bike and paddle camps. Swimming lessons are also planned for various age groups.
T-ball is for ages 6-8 and meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Charlie Lockhart Field, beginning June 28. Minor league is for ages 8-9 and is currently underway, with practices held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7:30 p.m. until games begin June 14. Major league, for ages 10-12, is also underway with games beginning earlier this week. Most are held Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. Youth all-stars is for ages 10-12 who are playing major league ball. Games against other towns take place through early August. Pony League practices got underway this week and games begin June 13 and take place through late July.
Junior girls softball is for girls ages 9-12. The first session is a practice/clinic today from 4:30-6 p.m. at the softball field. Practices are also set for June 10 and 13 from 4:30-6 p.m. and then beginning June 15, practices take place from noon-1:30 Mondays and Wednesdays. Games begin the week of June 20 and are played Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 1 p.m., with some tournaments also being played throughout the summer.
MRPA track and field is for boys and girls ages 7-15. Practices began this week and will continue twice a week, depending on which age group an individual falls in. The meeting time is 2:45-4 p.m. and the venue is the middle high school track. A practice meet is set for June 15 at 2:45 p.m., the regional is on June 28 in Caribou and qualifiers will move on to the state meet in Bangor July 12. Registration deadline is June 13.
Tennis lessons are available for ages 8 and over and will begin on June 27 with an ending date of July 27. Intermediate players (those who have a basic understanding of the game) will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30-9:15 a.m. and beginners (those who have little or no playing experience) will meet those same days from 9:30-10:15 a.m. Lessons are held at the tennis courts next to the swimming pool. Racquets are available for those who do not own one.
The Aroostook Valley Country Club is hosting a youth golf program again this summer for boys and girls ages 9-17. AVCC golf pro Steve Leitch will be instructing the program with assistance from other adult golfers. The program consists of one hour of instruction on Wednesdays from 10-11 a.m. beginning June 29. Also as part of the eight-week program, participants will have the opportunity to play up to nine holes of golf each Thursday at 10 a.m. with supervision from a mentor, beginning June 30. The department is offering two mountain bike camps this summer for boys and girls ages 9-14. The first camp will be held July 19-21 and the second camp will be Aug. 9-11. Bikers will meet at the community center each day at 12:15 p.m. and will need to be picked up at 3:30 p.m. Bikers may bring their own bike or one will be provided. Each rider should bring a bike helmet, water bottle and sunscreen.
Most of the riding will take place at the Nordic Heritage Center on the single track mountain bike trails (bus transportation to and from is included). The cost is $25 for each camp, payable to Fort Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department.
The department is offering kayaking and canoeing camps this summer for boys and girls ages 9-14. The two camps will be run in conjunction with summer school, with one being offered July 6-8 and the other July 25-27. Participants will meet at the community center each day at 12:15 p.m. and will need to be picked up by 3:30 p.m.
Kayaks, canoes, life jackets, paddles, and transportation to and from the water sites are included.Participants should bring a swimsuit, water shirt or T-shirt, water shoes, hat, towel, rain jacket, sunscreen, water bottle and a dry change of clothes. The cost is $25 for each camp, payable to Fort Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department.
Also offered in town are Tiger Basketball Camp at the high school and elementary school gym, creative arts camp at the community center and various library programs. Youth and pee wee soccer programs are also scheduled, with registration offered this week or in August. County United Soccer Camp is planned for Aug. 1-5.
Two sessions of swim lessons are also scheduled, the first from July 5-28, 2016 and the second from Aug. 1-18, 2016. Swim team practices will begin on June 20 and will be held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4-5 p.m. throughout the months of June and July.
