Repository celebrates its 14th year on Saturday, June 18, 2016

HOULTON, Maine — The Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum will host a public supper on Saturday, June 18 to begin their summer tour season. The meal is $9 per person and serving is 4:30 p.m. until 6. Turkey or beef pie will be the featured entree.

The next open tour date will be Saturday, June 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. and then beginning on Thursday, June 30, the museum will be open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoon or by appointment through mid-September. Tour admission is $5 per person or $3 for children 10 and younger.

Since last fall an addition has been added to the Carl and Helen Hagan barn to house a collection of farm tractors and other items. Colby Shaw, former museum president is in the process of building a service station. Shaw has a love of building and previously, he and his wife Rhonda built and donated the labor and some materials for the General Store.

Vintage items continue to be donated to the museum. The dream of a dozen area citizens has gone far beyond their expectations.

Since 2002, volunteers have continued to collect and fill eight classrooms in the former Littleton School, they have built a barn and added an addition to it, moved a one-room schoolhouse to the property, built a general store and now a service station.

Everything on display has a story and as each visitor views the many items they add their own recollections. The museum has the largest inventory of items north of Bangor. Even though the museum has been open for 14 years, many visitors say how they have thought about stopping, but when they pass by they are either on their way to south or don’t take the time to visit because they are on their way home. Visitors are amazed at the massive collection that has been built throughout the years.

The museum is a great place to spend some time and to bring visiting friends and family. If there are residents in the area who are retired or others who may have time on their hands there are lots of jobs if one is interested. Tour guides are needed to show visitors around the complex, three hours on a Friday or Saturday.

Outside work includes, mowing the lawn, tending some flowers, painting, washing windows, organizing tools and equipment for display. Inside the museum there are housekeeping jobs, setting tables and decorating for events, cleaning items for display, repairing items, cataloging, framing photos or documents. If you have a few hours a week or once or twice a month contact Karen Donato, 694-6099 or Francis Fitzpatrick, 538-0050. Volunteers make their own schedule to fit their lifestyle.
