102 Years Ago – June 11, 1914

A visit — H.C. Frainham, managing editor of the Bangor Commercial, was in town a short time and made a pleasant call at the Star-Herald office. He accompanied Prof. A.E. Rogers of Orono who was touring Aroostook County by auto in the interests of his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Congress at the primaries.

Title — About 65 members of Mystic Tie, I.O.O.F., went to Ashland by special train to attend the dedication of the Odd Fellow’s Hall there. Three degrees were worked upon 19 candidates, 17 of them joined the Ashland lodge and two of them belonged there.

75 Years Ago – June 12, 1941

Black elected — George W. Black of Easton was elected commander of the Ray Goding Post. Other officers elected were Herman Kirk, vice commander; Clyde P. Johnson, treasurer; G. Irving Brown, adjutant; and C. Hanson, chaplain.

Sgt. promoted to Lieutenant — State Police Sergeant Llewellyn H. Ouellette, in charge of the Fifth District, Aroostook County, was promoted by Chief Henry P. Weaver to lieutenant. He had been on the force since 1925.

50 Years Ago – June 16, 1966

Maynard won — At Spud, the “hit” of the afternoon was an intentional head-on-crash of Willie Doak and Fred Shaw. Roaring around the track, they collided in front of the crowd demolishing the front end of two cars given by Peterson’s Service. Butch Maynard won the day’s feature race.

Ambulance service — The newly organized Star City Ambulance Service, which had purchased the fully-equipped Cadillac ambulances, took over the ambulance service in the Presque Isle area. Gil Burby was owner of the service that served Washburn, Easton and Mapleton in addition to Presque Isle.

25 Years Ago – June 12, 1991

Torch run — Presque Isle Policeman Roger Ellis completed the Law Enforcement Torch Run in Presque Isle. The event benefited the Maine Special Olympics, with local rally sponsored by the Main Street branch of Key Bank. Over 800 law enforcement officials participated, carrying the “Flame of Hope” more than 900 miles.

Retirement — After 23 years of employment at the University of Maine at Presque Isle as administrative assistant to the president and four presidents later, Tweena Kelley sought a slower pace of life after retiring May 31. President James R. Roach and his wife, Dr. Denise C. Hogan, entertained Kelley and campus employees at a farewell reception at their home May 23.
