 100 Years Ago – June 14, 1916

 Tom Thumb — The entertainment under the auspices of the Houlton Woman’s Club on Friday evening at the High School Auditorium was largely attended. About 75 of Houlton’s children took part in the “Tom Thumb” production, which was under the direction of Miss Bessie Jones of Topeka, Kansas.

 Honored — Hon. John B. Madigan of Houlton, Justice of the Maine Supreme Court, was given a doctor of laws degree at Georgetown University last week. Justice Madigan has been president of the New England Alumni association, and already holds two degrees of A. B. having been bestowed upon him in 1883 and the degree of A. M. in 1889.

 

75 Years Ago – June 12, 1941

 Winner — Miss Dorothy Lunt, owner and manager of the Silhouette Beauty Shoppe, was the winner of a cash prize of $100 the past week in a contest sponsored by the Dermetics Company with headquarters in New York and Seattle, Wash. Miss Lunt won on a letter written on the subject “Why I Like Dermetics.”

 Wins scholarship — Curtis H. Moore Jr. of Ricker Junior College, Houlton, is one of 46 junior college instructors selected from the faculties of the nation’s 625 junior colleges to receive a special scholarship for six weeks’ study this summer at a special workshop for junior college instructors at the George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tenn.

 

50 Years Ago – June 15, 1966

 Flight instructions — Ken Larson and Arden Thompson have just qualified for their certified flight instructor’s rating, and have two planes in which they will be giving instructions. Both are members of the Houlton International Flying Club, and combined they have had nearly 1,400 hours of flying time.

 Farewell party — The Oakfield Fire Department held a farewell party for the Fire Chief Roger Greenlaw Thursday evening. Mr. Greenlaw has been transferred from his present position with the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad to a new position with the company in Searsport and will move there June 18.

 

25 Years Ago – June 12, 1991

 Welcome — Leigh Cummings, president-elect of the Houlton Rotary Club, welcomed Rep. Nason Graham, guest speaker at the club meeting. Graham told of his 15-day trip to the Soviet Union in the early spring. He was selected as one of 12 in the United States from young political leaders to make the trip.

 Adventure — Wayne Quint, a member of the teaching profession for the past 31 years, told the 89 students in the Class of 1991 at Houlton High School to communicate with others, speak up, but be truthful. He emphasized the importance of every minute in their lives and encouraged them to study and learn, saying, “Only fools refuse to be taught.”
