To the editor:
Over the past four years we have been the recipients of the Houlton School System Student Community Service Day. Each year I say I am going to write a “Letter to the Editor” praising this service. Well, this is the year!
This year we had 12 freshmen (boys and girls) accompanied by their teacher, Heather Fagnant. These young people (we would call them kids) came to our home not knowing what work they would be doing. Fortunately, this year the weather was beautiful and the kids could do the outside work we had planned for them do. As we live on wooded property, the kids raked leaves left over from last fall, cleaned up branches, carried wood, trimmed small trees and painted. We kept them busy and on the move.
When we took our lunch break they sat on our deck and were just kids. What a delight to hear their young voices and happy chatter. Afterwards, they went back to work and finished their jobs.
This is such a wonderful program for our community. It gives us an opportunity to see our kids in a positive role, and our kids an opportunity to accomplish something for our community. We highly praise the Houlton School System for this service and praise our young people for being such willing workers. Thank you!
