Free summer lunch program returns

HOULTON, Maine — With school now out, some area children may find it difficult to find a good meal.

That is why some local school districts are once again offering a free lunch program for area youths.

In Houlton, the Summer Food Service program, sponsored by the RSU 29 School Department, will offer free lunches for all children ages 18-and-younger starting Monday, June 20, 2016.

Lunch will be served through July 28 at the following sites — Methodist Church on Military Street in Houlton; Monticello Recreation, School Street in Monticello; Maliseet Gym, Foxcroft Road in Houlton; and Houlton Middle School, 7 Bird St.

All meals must be eaten on site. No applications are required. Children may simply show up Monday through Thursday. There will be no meals served on Monday, July 4 and Tuesday, July 5.

For more information or to volunteer, contact Joyce Smith, RSU 29 Food Services supervisor, at 521-0358.

Students in the RSU 50 region of Southern Aroostook and Katahdin will be able to participate in both a free breakfast and lunch program from Tuesday, July 5 through Thursday, July 28. Meals will be served Mondays through Thursday from two sites — Katahdin Elementary School and Southern Aroostook Community School.

At SACS, breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. with lunch offered at 11:30 a.m. Call 757-8206 if your child wishes to attend.

At KES, breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. and lunch at noon. Call 365-4285 if your child wishes to attend.
