AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has named Mapleton and 28 other communities across the state to receive funding from the Clean Water for Maine bond.
Maine voters passed the bond in November 2014, and as a result, $5,400,000 in funds was earmarked for vital improvement projects including stream crossing and culvert upgrades.
Mapleton was awarded $95,000 for upgrades on the Pulcifur Road.
Statewide, the projects awarded will benefit public infrastructure by replacing several culverts that are currently failing and at risk of complete washouts, open up fish spawning habitat, eliminate undersized and other impassable culverts and reduce some of the worst ongoing erosion impacts to streams, brooks, and lakes.
The DEP received 85 applications totaling over $6.8 million in requests, and has issued more than $2.4 million in grant money through this second round of applications. The application for the third round of the Grants for Stream Crossing Public Infrastructure Improvements will be announced soon.
Also in Aroostook County, Fort Kent received $2,500 for the Multi-Purpose Heritage Trail.
