SHELBURNE, NH – Richard E. Hayes, age 90, went home to be with the Lord on June 10, 2016, after a brief illness. He was born August 26, 1925, in Shelburne, NH, the son of Roland Sr. and Margaret (Wilson) Hayes. He was raised in Shelburne and attended schools in Shelburne and Gorham.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 3rd Infantry Regiment. He was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, during the last few months of the war. He met Mildred (James) Hayes of Presque Isle, ME, and they were married on September 6, 1948. They lived in Shelburne their entire marriage, with the exception of five years when they lived in Presque Isle. It was in Shelburne that they raised their five children. One of his most recent memorable events was participating on September 27, 2015, with the Honor Flight of New England on a tour of Washington, D.C. This organization brings Veterans of war to Washington, D.C., to tour the many monuments and memorials of the Armed Services and to pay tribute to their service. World War II veterans are given first consideration because of their age.Â
Richard is survived by his daughter, Wanda Smith of Punta Gorda, FL; son, Timothy Hayes of Shelburne; daughter, Patrice Becker and husband, Michael of Westbrook, ME; son, James Hayes and wife, Cheryl of Laconia, NH; and daughter, Heidi Walker and husband, Thomas of Weare, NH. He also is survived by 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; as well as brother, Roland Jr. and wife, Roma Hayes of Manchester, NH; brother, Warren (Tommy) and wife, Nina Hayes of Shelburne, NH; sister, Shirley (Hayes) and husband, George Lemay of Merrimack, NH; and brother, Charles and wife, Jodie Hayes of Wisconsin; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred Hayes; infant son, Randall; son-in-law, Bernard Smith; daughter-in-law, Tina Hayes; sisters, Helen Saunders, Dorothy Bean, Doris Gorham and Priscilla Meyers.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at 10 a.m., at the Bryant Funeral Home, 1 Promenade St., Gorham, NH. Interment followed at the Leadmine Cemetery, North Road, Shelburne, NH. Friends and relatives called at the Bryant Funeral Home on Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Honor Flight of New England, P.O.
