PORTAGE, Maine — Multiple police agencies swarmed the area Thursday morning in response to a 9-1-1 call about a man involved in a domestic dispute and suspected of being armed.
But the incident ended peacefully and no charges are anticipated, according to an email sent to multiple media outlets June 9, 2016 by Aroostook County Sheriff Darrell Crandall.
“Given the significant law enforcement response to the area, I believe an explanation of some kind to the community is warranted,” Crandall said in the email.
Just before 11:30 a.m., a 9-1-1 caller reported a disturbance between family members inside a home in Portage, according to the sheriff. Deputies, state police troopers and the Ashland police chief converged on the area after deputies learned that a 53-year-old man allegedly involved in the reported disturbance had left the home and gone into a large wooded area. Officers believed the man was possibly armed.
Police searched the area “to ensure the man’s safety,” the sheriff said.
Then, at around 3 p.m. the man returned to his residence, where a sheriff’s deputy was stationed.
“The man was cooperative and deputy sheriffs drove him to Northern Maine Medical Center” in Fort Kent, Crandall said in the email.
“No shots were fired, no one was assaulted or injured and based upon what we know now there will be no criminal charges,” the sheriff wrote.
The email did not name the individual or indicate whether he was armed with a weapon.
The sheriff concluded, “No further information will be released at this time.”
