Boys tennis team suffers 4-1 loss to Camden Hills
HAMPDEN, Maine — The Caribou boys’ tennis team’s season came to an end following a 4-1 loss to Camden Hills in the Class B North regional championship match, played last Tuesday indoors at the Armstrong Tennis Center.
The Vikings, ranked fourth, finished the season with a stellar 13-2 record. Camden Hills, seeded second, went on to capture the state championship.
Caribou’s lone win came in No. 2 doubles as the duo of Austin Cheplic and Gabriel Rand won a tough three-set match, 7-6 (7-1), 1-6 and 6-3.
“They played awesome,” said Viking coach John Habeeb of Cheplic and Rand’s performance, “and won one that was real fun to watch.”
The other four matches saw Camden Hills prevail in straight sets. In singles, Matt Morse bested Ethan Plourde, 6-2, 6-4; Luke Burstein got past Alec Cyr, 6-2, 6-0; and Josiah Krul, a Caribou native, toppled Emerson Duplissie-Cyr, 6-2, 6-4.
In the other doubles match, Alex Forcillo and Colby Arno of the Windjammers defeated the Vikings’ Austin Scott and Bailey Griffeth, 6-1, 6-1.
“[Despite the loss], it was a fine season for our boys,” Habeeb said, “and I’m proud of their outstanding efforts.”
Plourde and Scott are the lone graduates for the Vikings, so Habeeb expects another strong season in 2017.
