102 Years Ago – June 18, 1914
Announcement — Dr. F.S. Walker, a dentist and a graduate of Tufts College, announced the opening of his dental offices in the Brick Block in Presque Isle. He had been practicing dentistry with Dr. Clifford of Houlton for the past year.
First Anniversary — E.P. Wilkins, proprietor of the new New York Store celebrated the first anniversary of his going into business in the county. The store was prettily decorated. Each lady who came into the store during that day was presented with a dainty box of Apollo chocolates.
75 Years Ago – June 19, 1941
Airport inspection — Prominent Army and Work Progress Administration officials visited the Presque Isle Airport to make a routine inspection in the interest of speeding to completion this Class 4 Port. In the inspection group were D.F. McCouley of Washington, director of airways and airports under the WPA; state WPA Administrator John Fitzgerald, Lt. Col. D.M. Harlow, liaison officer between the WPA and the War department; State WPA Project Supervisor William R. Crowell.
Gift to St. Mary’s — St. Mary’s Church of Presque Isle has been made a beneficiary in the will of the late Rev. Joseph Leguennec, who served as pastor of the parish in 1908-09. The amount bequeathed was $1,000 and it was the hope of Father Feeney to eventually use the gift for a new altar.
50 Years Ago – June 23, 1966
New assistant to city manager — Dana Connors, formerly of Easton, was named administrative assistant to the city manager of Presque Isle. Conners assumed the position after a three- to four-month tour of duty with the Air National Guard.
Florida came to Maine — Forace F. Holland, field coordinator in Florida for Economic Development Administration (formerly ARA) inspected Maine Sugar Industries Inc. construction site, with his counterpart, Jerome H. Barnett, of Maine EDA office and George M. Philbrick, vice president of MSI. Holland was one of six field coordinators in country chosen to visit other states.
25 Years Ago – June 22, 1991
Hanging up their hats — Two Maine Public Service employees who started their careers as firemen at the Caribou electric generating facility announced their retirements from the Aroostook County based power company. Edward McGlinn of Caribou compiled more than 40 years with the company while William Drost Jr., also of Caribou, worked 39 years for MPS. Meanwhile Berneice Cormier and Dorothy Sowers were recognized by The Aroostook Medical Center for 30 years of service each.
Stepping down — Presque Isle High School Aaron Nelson wrapped up a 14-year career with SAD 1 as he accepted a plaque from School Board President Jim Bubar.
