100 Years Ago – June 21, 1916
New paper — The new paper at Mars Hill, the Mars Hill Enterprise, has been received at this office. It is to be looked after by W. S. Coes, who has associated himself with Mr. E. E. Moorse of Milo, and the people of this hustling town can be assured of an up-to-date paper as Mr. Coes has had much experience in this line. Congratulations to the Mars Hill Enterprise.
75 Years Ago – June 19, 1941
Plywood planes — Consideration of Houlton as a possible site for the erection of a factory to build airplane bodies of plywood and assemble completed planes was indicated this week in reports from Washington and Augusta. Interest in the idea has been known locally for some time.
Flag day — Several hundred participated in the Flag Day Observance of Elks Club. The affair got under way shortly after 7 o’clock with a parade headed by the Houlton Band, followed by the Elks delegation and representatives of other service, social and fraternal organizations.
50 Years Ago – June 22, 1966
The winner — Fred Quint Jr. of Patten was the winner of a 14-foot Aluma Craft boat and 6-horsepower Chrysler motor given away by the Houlton Lodge of Elks. The club used proceeds from the boat project for local charitable work of the Elks Lodge.
Recognized — Special awards and citations, recognizing the Flower Show School conducted at Houlton in April, were presented during the annual convention of the Garden Club Federation of Maine at Portland.
25 Years Ago – June 19, 1991
100 years old — Catherine M. Humphrey, known to many as Kate, was honored on her 100th birthday June 17 at the Madigan Estates Nursing Home. Kate has been a lifelong resident of Houlton. Through her lifetime, she has been a member of the Houlton United Methodist Church, the Houlton Woman’s Club, Eastern Star, the WSCS at the church, Business and Professional Women and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen Auxiliary. She is the widow of Alfred Humphrey.
Honored — Several members of Houlton Regional Hospital’s Board of Trustees were honored with a dinner reception at the Atrium Restaurant. Jack Ketch and Dr. William Blackwell received gavel plaques for serving as chairmen. Ketch served from 1986-89, Blackwell from 1989-91. Paul McGillicuddy was recognized and presented with a plaque for assisting in the hospital’s physician recruitment efforts.
