HOULTON, Maine — The First Baptist Church on Court Street will host Mission Sunday to meet and hear Pastor Tanis Derolus, his wife, Esther, and their three children.
The family will be guests at the Sunday morning worship service at 10 a.m., when Pastor Tanis will speak. Then at 5 p.m. the church will host an area potluck and the couple will share their testimony following the meal. Those attending should bring a covered dish to contribute. The church will provide the beverages.
Pastor and Esther Tanis will talk about how their lives in the Dominican Republic led to their providing a school at Colegio Moriah and a church in a walled compound in the village of Las Colinas II, a poor village of Haitian refugees in San Pedro de Macoris.
The vision of Friends of Colegio Moriah (FOCM) is to offer new hope and opportunity to Haitians in the Dominican Republic through facilitating quality education and health services, guided by Christian principles.
Many Baptists from around the US, but particularly in Maine, have journeyed to the DR to work with Pastor Tanis. Craig Bean is the Treasurer of FOCM and has been visiting and working on the school and a nearby hospital in La Romana for over 20 years. Two of his trips included members of the local Rotary Club working on sanitation issues.
In January, Pastor Dennis Ashley from First Baptist Church, along with several members of churches in the area, spent two weeks at Colegio Moriah sharing the workload as well as their testimony of what God has done for them and can do for those who seek him.
All are welcome to hear the pastor and his wife share their inspirational story of dedicated service to their people facing almost insurmountable odds to survive and succeed.
