Young Soap Box Derby competition racers conquer ‘Thrill of the Hill’

HOULTON, Maine — A field of about 35 young racers converged on “Derby Hill” in Houlton Saturday for the 21st annual Soap Box Derby competition.

Vying for a shot at a trip to Akron, Ohio for the national meet, the field of young racers competed throughout the day in the double-elimination event. And when the checkered flag fell, two youngsters had proven their mettle as the top racers on the day.

Caden Foster captured the Stock Division, while Sara Heath was crowned champ of the Super Stock Division. With their victories, the two qualified to attend the 79th annual FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby, July 10-16 at Derby Downs Track in Akron, Ohio. The National Derby is expected to feature more than 450 Soap Box Derby champions from around the world.

For winning the Stock Division, Foster received $100 cash from 1996 stock champ Brandon Carmichael. In winning the Super Stock Division, Heath received $100 cash in memory of Seth Fitzpatrick, a 1998 champion.

Josh McGillicuddy was selected as the Wayne Miller Sportsmanship Award winner, while Emma Folsom received the Alicia Dudzinski Spirit Award.

Special committee awards, in memory of Chris Hiscoe and Aimee Fitzpatrick, were presented to Braden Scott and Makaelyn Porter. The VIP Stock award went to Stephen Bruen, while the VIP Super Stock award went to Holden Stoutamyer.

Finishers in the Stock division were: 1, Foster; 2, Trafton Russell; 3, Josh McGillicuddy; 4, Luke Howland; 5, Logan Shaw; 6, Brittany Thompson; 7, David Dahlk; and 8, Stephen Bruen.

Finishers in the Super Stock division were: 1, Heath; 2, Mallory Bruen; 3, Yvonne Henderson; 4, Makaelyn Porter,; 5, Lexi Emerson; 6, Parker Grant; 7, Rylee Rioux; and 8, Holden Stoutamyer.
