 TRAVELERS REST, SC —Margaret Mary O’Brien, known as Peggy, died Friday, June 10, 2016, in Travelers Rest, SC.
She was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, the oldest of the late Joseph and Mary Daly’s four daughters.
She attended the boarding school Loreto Abbey in Rathfarnham, Dublin. After a year at Beaufort House to finish, she went on to receive her DDS from University College Dublin and worked as a dentist in Co. Kilkenny and London, England. Â
She married William Aloysius O’Brien in 1958 and moved to the United States, where eventually they settled in Presque Isle, ME.
In Presque Isle she was a devoted mother, raising four children in a beautiful home where family dinners, often with guests, were the center of life. Â She played bridge, became an accomplished skier, and was a particularly avid golfer. Â Her outgoing, fun-loving, confident personality delighted her friends and family. Â She hosted many dinner and cocktail parties, providing delicious food and the warmest hospitality. Â She was always active in the Roman Catholic Church. Â
With her husband, she enjoyed a wonderful retirement on Callawassie Island, SC. Â
Her sisters Francis (Frankie) O’Rourke and Josephine (Jojo) O’Doherty predeceased her. Â
She is survived by her husband; her sister Marie O’Rourke; her children Geraldine, David, Gavin, and Timothy; and eight grandchildren.
A Vigil Service and Recitation of the Rosary was held on Monday evening June 20, 2016, led by a deacon from St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, 639 N. Main Street. Â We received visitors afterwards until 7:30 p.m. The following day, the Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at noon followed by a committal in the St. Mary’s columbarium. Â A reception followed the Mass on Tuesday June 21, 2016 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Woodlands Trailhead Court, Greenville, SC.
