Community celebration will begin Friday
STOCKHOLM, Maine — The town of Stockholm is gearing up to celebrate its 135th anniversary with a full long weekend of activities July 1-4, 2016.
The fun begins Friday, July 1, with an 1890s musical program at the American Legion at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door.
Events Saturday, July 2, feature a road race sponsored by Snowy Mt., at a time and place yet to be announced. The Fire Department will conduct children’s games beginning at 10 a.m., and from 1-4 p.m. the Stockholm Historical Society Museum will play a slide show of past events.
The evening will conclude with karaoke and a dance at the Legion Hall beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $8.
Several worship services will occur Sunday, July 3, including at 9 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 10 a.m. at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church at 11 a.m. at the Stockholm Baptist Church. A chicken barbecue will begin at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa’s, going until the chicken is gone.
The museum will be open from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., and a community sing-along will take place at a time and place to be announced.
Monday, July 4, will begin with a pancake breakfast at the Brigade Lodge from 6-9 a.m. The museum will be open from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and root beer floats will be served at 11. Throughout the day, the American Legion will provide hot dogs and hamburgers, and from 11-1 strawberry shortcakes will be sold at Little Knockout.
The annual Fourth of July parade will start at 11 a.m., and the Mad River Duck Race gets underway at 1 p.m.
The caboose will be open from 12-2 p.m., and a ceremony will dedicate the plaque honoring Clayton Nelson.
The celebration’s finale will be the Madawaska Lake Boat Parade at dusk, followed by fireworks.
