Bystanders pull woman from burning car in FF crash

FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine A local woman is in serious condition at a Bangor hospital after bystanders pulled her from a burning vehicle moments after it crashed on Route 167, according to police.

Annette Lopez, 27, was traveling on Route 167 towards Fort Fairfield Sunday morning when the 2002 Chevrolet Impala she was driving crashed off the road and caught fire. The Fort Fairfield Police and Fire departments responded to the scene at 7 a.m. and found that bystanders had pulled Lopez from the burning vehicle, according to Fort Fairfield police Chief Shawn Newell.
Lopez was taken by Crown Ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle and subsequently flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor in “serious condition,” Newell said.
The Fort Fairfield Police Department is investigating the crash and want to find the bystanders who helped Lopez out of her vehicle.
“The person or people who placed themselves in harm’s way by helping Ms. Lopez out of her vehicle while it was engulfed in flames need to be recognized,” Newell said in a news release. “There is no doubt in my mind this would have been an entirely different investigation had they not been there to help her.”
Newell asked the bystanders to contact Fort Fairfield police at 472-3808.
