HOULTON, Maine — A total of 38 school children were recently awarded with new bicycles thanks to their diligence in reading by the Houlton Masonic Lodge No. 96 as part of their Bikes for Books program.
On May 20, 2016 an assembly was held at the Houlton Elementary School where eight bikes were awarded to kids in grades pre-K to second. This year this school put up some amazing numbers by reading over 1,158 total hours during the reading period.
One week later Mill Pond School in Hodgdon had bikes awarded to grades K-8 which was expanded at the assembly to include two more bikes opened to all grades with all entries going into the final drawing.
Teacher Tina Burrill was the lucky winner of the $50 gift certificate. The kids read over 1,300 books during this program.
