102 Years Ago – June 25, 1914

Guessing game — Mrs. H. B. Forbes was the lucky recipient of the sweeper-vac offered by R.J. Smith & Co., to the one who guessed nearest the amount of dirt taken from the rug in front of the store during the week. The exact weight was one pound and six ounces, Mr. Forbes guessed one pound and seven ounces.

Lot bought — It was reported that L.S. Bean had bought the Wellington lot north of the Post Office and planned on building a garage there. The lot was lain idle and unoccupied for many years.

75 Years Ago – June 26, 1941

PI swimming pool opened — The Presque Isle Swimming Pool opened last Monday with nearly 300 excited youngsters participating in the opening activity. Swimming and lifesaving classes began under the direction of instructor Eddie Bear.

Attending State Convention — Beulah Hansen, president of the PI Business & Professional Women’s Club; Margaret Ranlett, past president and Anne Underwood, state treasurer, attended the State BPW Convention which was held at the Rangeley Lakes House, Rangeley, Maine. The principal speakers at the convention were Mis Margaret Hickey, national education chairman from St. Louis, Mo., and State Representative Mrs. Margaret Smith.

50 Years Ago – June 30, 1966

Training session — Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and cardiopulmonary were among the practices demonstrated at a training session for the Recreation staff conducted by Dana Swett, safety director of the Maine Public Service Company. Mr. Swett discussed these first aid methods and showed a film.

25 Years Ago – June 26, 1991

Donation for the homeless — St. Mary’s Social Action sponsored a June 14 dinner and variety show, benefitting the Temporary Shelter for the Homeless in Presque Isle. Shelter Director Goldie Whitmore accepted the contribution of $1,734 presented by St. Mary’s Peace and Justice Committee Chairman Aldeo Belanger.

Time to travel — Wilma Cambridge, a 15-year Dead River Company employee, retired from her data input position at the Presque Isle office. Her children, Mrs. Matthew Dick of Mapleton and David Cambridge of Washburn attended a June 12 retirement party with central Aroostook Dead River employees and their spouses.
