Club offers crafting event
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Aroostook Band of Micmacs Boys and Girls Club of Presque Isle and the Micmac Youth Program have been awarded a $6,000 grant from the People of Color Fund of the Maine Community Foundation. The Aroostook Band of Micmacs Housing Department contributed an additional $1,500.
Monies awarded will support a new program under the 105 Club entitled “Culturally Strong Youth Program.” Students will be able to attend three workshops, each teaching traditional Native American craft skills: making moccasins, traditional beading and regalia/skirt or shirt making.
Sessions will emphasize age-appropriate abilities. Micmac language support will be encouraged throughout all workshops.
Sign-up is ongoing until July 29, 2016.
Students who sign up for the “105 Club” have an attendance goal of 105 days. Statistics have shown that youth who achieve this goal, are twice as likely to graduate from high school and develop strong leadership abilities.
Projects will continue for one year or until fully completed and the attendance goal is met. Incentives will be offered as students complete different phases of the program. Each member achieving both requirements will receive a certificate and a final incentive.
This program is open to all members, native and non-native, of the Presque Isle Boys and Girls Club and the Micmac Youth Program. There are no fees and the activities are open to ages 5-18.
Transportation is provided for this program to current members. Parents are encouraged to participate with their children to support their learning during workshops, but are not required.
To sign up for the Club 105 program or the Boys and Girls Club, see Deb Cyr at the club’s office in the Micmac Wellness Building, 56 Micmac Drive, Presque Isle, or visit www.pi-bgc.org.
